About Us
Staram is working on making laws accessible and improving access to justice by enabling the building of technology solutions for the Indian law and justice ecosystem.
Established in April 2024, Staram is building an open source layer that will map India’s law and justice system through knowledge graphs and ontologies that are validated by a community of domain experts.
This would help in:
- Classification and normalization of data from courts and regulatory information which would enable stakeholders to easily analyze documents and extract key data points.
- Help redefine legal operations by bringing together multiple categories of collaborative, curated and innovative legal tech products and solutions that can lower professional service costs, improve outcomes and increase productivity.
- Alleviate the human toll of cognitive switching and help professionals achieve deep work consistently.
- Improving efficiency, reduce risk, and enable interoperability of solutions.
- Make legal tech and algorithms explainable, transparent and accountable
Where Innovation Meets Collaboration
We are set up as a collaboration between DAKSH, India’s leading law and justice reform non-profit think tank, and Lex AI India Pvt. Ltd., a legal-tech venture. Staram is incubated at FIRST of IIT Kanpur and supported by CSR grants by Premji Invest. We are also collaborating with SALI Alliance (an international non-profit), on developing the Legal Matter Specification Standards for India. This project is at the intersection of data-science, law, technology, engineering and AI to develop a standardized taxonomy that could be more widely accepted across the legal industry.
Our journey began with The Alliance for Indian Legal Ontology and Standards, an initiative under Judicial Data Collaborative (JDC), setting the stage for our relentless pursuit of excellence in the realm of legal technology.
We are looking at engaging with legal policy organizations that are working together to develop ontologies for specific laws and domains. Our goal is to create a standardized set of concepts and relationships that can be used to improve knowledge management and data integration in the Indian legal industry.
Our Aim
We aim to work closely with different groups, such as government agencies, courts, law firms, businesses, and researchers, to make sure these tools are widely available. Together, we hope to improve the legal industry.
